Thanks for highlighting our service Laura! MyPolice is in the process of being built and we have scheduled pilots in England and Scotland. It was great to meet Matthew and Steve at the RSA and learn more about their project with the NPIA.
We look forward to collaborating with you in 2010. You can visit our site to learn more and ask any questions you might have!

Just spotted this and thought it might be of interest:

"MyPolice is an online feedback tool that enables the public and the police to have a conversation. It fosters constructive, collaborative communication between people and the Police forces which serve them."

Genuine, relevant public engagement is something I've been thinking about a lot recently. NESTA's 'the human factor' pamphlet highlights the role of communities in engagement and our work with the Foundation Trust Network has touched on the requirements around local member engagement. I still think that there's a hell of a long way to go on this issue but that it's so important we have to keep trying.

In these times where we're recently well-served by (usually private sector) services tailored to be responsive and convenient, the public and third sector have a lot of catching up to do.

The catch 22 with good public engagement is that once you start codifying it and trying to make it part of that organization's practice you take away what makes it good public engagement - that it's natural and genuine.

Good public engagement has to come from people that know the communities they are working in, or the clients they get. That comes from experience and intimate knowledge, not a handbook.

You can tool structures to help foster a mutual engagement, something that design for resourcefulness recognizes and needs to become a wider philosophy.

Great post, and an accurate set of bullet points.
